It’s that time of year when Grand Designs LIVE rolls back into town! It’s super easy to feel a bit swamped when you get there with the sheer size and volume of people, events and stuff to look at. BUT fear not! Check out our MUST-SEE guide to glean the most from the nine days extravaganza!

See you there! ;)

Saturday 4th May

You can get to hear the real life stories from Architect Micah Jones and his wife Elaine’s experience of building their own home in County Down.

The concept behind their forever home was a shed. And we love the way they describe the principles behind the design:

“Sheds unlike houses are designed and built around the function without thought for re-sale value or traditional conformities. The County Down Barn was designed as a big shed to form a backdrop for ever changing family life. A house which could respond to family life in a playful and pragmatic manner, but which would also fits the beautiful landscape it inhabits”

PS. You can also tune in to see Box House - an example of the U-Build featured in Grand Designs: The Street at 9pm on the 25th of April on Channel 4.

It’s well worth watching as the program centres the first street built in Graven Hill, Bicester: a pioneering Development of 1900 Custom and Self Build houses. The Graven Hill project is of National significance, a ‘vanguard’ project aiming to help the government double CSH Homes by 2020.

We’re really excited to go and hear Design Studio 31 speak on “Learning the Value of Landscape” - especially so as we’ll be featuring an article about their work and ethos next month! As a little prelude, they believe in health and wellbeing whilst protecting the environmental landscape through research-led design work.

PS. If you can’t make it to this event, they will also be speaking on “Health versus House” on the 11th of May at 12:00 - 12:45 in the Grand Theatre, along with Sommer Pyne, Interior Stylist and lifestyle blogger (@housecurious) - FYI!

Want to hear the true story of what goes on behind a “Grand Designs” build? We’re looking forward to hearing the secrets straight from brothers Nik and Jon who built next door to each other on an old corn mill site! The project is designed by Sheffield-based CODA Bespoke and if you want to read more about the project beforehand, Dezeen wrote a brilliant article about the project here.

There’s a couple of things we recommend seeing on Thursday. First of all a peek behind the scenes of a “Grand Designs” Huf Haus.

The Huf Haus company is 100 years old, unbelievably! But fans insist its iconic kit home is still cutting-edge and so do the designers. We’d like to go and listen to Peter Huf talk all about it!

WHEN: Thursday 9th May at 11:00 - 11:45am

The second is right afterwards and is a talk named “Take the Fear out of Financing Your Build Project”.

There’s going to be representatives of a selection of lending institutions discussing; “How Does it Work”?, “What are the Pit Falls?” and “How to make the journey of a being Offered a Self-Build / Custom Build Mortgage a positive experience.”

Time to get your pen and paper out for extensive note taking!

We’re going to be tuning in to hear Emma Hooton from Studio Hooton talk about “How to Plan and Create Exceptional Interiors”.

Apparently, a whooping 80% of interior design happens before you choose your furniture and colours so it’ll be well worth joining Emma, as she reveals the crucial planning decisions you need to make!

Architect Carl Turner and his wife Mary Martin will be talking about the home they built and sold: The Glass Cubes House. The designers built a home that resembled ‘a giant stack of glass cubes’, with minimalism, they created a space as simple to live in as possible. The house also has a design that diffuses light throughout, offers triple glazing, rain harvesting and solar panels to boost its eco-credentials. Plus, this is low carbon CSH level 5 construction!
