Open House London 2019

Open House London always comes around at just the right time. The autumn chill is on the breeze, the sun is still shining and for those who have decided THIS is the year to renovate, it is time to get your ducks in a row. So what could be better timed than to be able to go and see some projects up close and personal and chat to the homeowners who have actually done what you’re planning to do and have been through the rigmarole and lived to tell the tale!

There is a fine crop this year but these are our selected recommendations. Let us know how you get on!

Why we think you should see it: Go see the sculptural interiors plus the amazing terracotta metal cladding. An inspiring glimpse into this hidden courtyard!

Open House Info: Making efficient use of an irregular urban site, this house is made up of interconnecting top-lit pavilions arranged to define a tranquil private courtyard.

Why we think you should see it: An example of what can happen if we let our imagination run free. Designed by the architect for his own family, this project exemplifies of how using light, creative forms and playful elements (there’s a slide!) can create a joyful and magical space. Watch the architect discussing his inspiring project here.

Open House Info: The house uses traditional building materials while seeking to showcase great modern design, skilfully applied to a family home.

Why we think you should see it: Magri Williams are the architects to watch. This young and creative studio love clean minimal lines. If you prefer a calmer, refined look this is a great opportunity to experience the joy of crisp detail in the flesh.

Info: The existing building is a Victorian terrace house made from London stock brick. The project comprises of a brick rear extension, zinc loft conversion and complete house refurbishment, including a new plywood staircase.

Why we think you should see it: A brilliant example of combining contemporary design with original features and why you don’t have to be afraid to use colour, and a lot of it!

Info: A Georgian townhouse re-examined. With a ‘more-is-more’ brief, this beautiful locally listed property in Stepney incorporates arch glazing, pivot windows, bright steels and a reclaimed palette to blend Bauhaus, Art Deco and Steampunk.

Why we think you should see it: A lovely palette of materials and forms on a very complex urban site. If you’re looking to build on a backland or garden site this project is well worth a visit!

Info: New-build house replacing a former garage on the plot. Due to the tight garden site, the design of the house has to navigate complex planning and infrastructural restrictions, resulting in the compact stained timber clad design.

Why we think you should see it: A big favourite of ours (and recently featured in our Journal); this uses cork inside and out because of the fantastic properties it provides, along with an unexpected and wonderful aesthetic.

Info: Shortlisted for the AJ's Small project Awards 2019, this extension evolved through a process of co-creation with the clients. Clad externally and internally with cork, pink window frames provide a flash of colour against the dark cork .
